A promise is made to accomplish something — a vow is made to become someone.

Vows exist in almost every tradition. It is a way of deepening our spiritual path — or a relationship we hold holy — through commitment, often made between the one taking the vow and a purpose considered sacred. It is an intentional act of aligning one's will with a higher will.
A promise is often made to accomplish something; a vow is made to become someone. A promise may depend on circumstances; a vow remains even when circumstances change. A promise speaks to the future, whereas a vow transforms the present, often in ways unimaginable until that vow is taken.

"O Divine Sculptor, chisel Thou my life according to Thy design! "
